Pop star Olivia Rodrigo managed to surprise the VMAs audience with her faux stage malfunction act. It was all part of the plan as she recreated the Vampire music video on stage live. Part of her act included her looking around frightened when the fireworks erupted. That’s when a member of staff quickly appeared on the stage to escort her out. The lights were shut off and the building was plunged into darkness.

Then Olivia’s song vampire began playing and later dancers came out. The celebrity joined them to prove it was only part of the choreography. Well played, Olivia.

But the faux act managed to catch the stars off guard as the camera panned to Selena Gomez who looked genuinely confused and scared.

Rodrigo’s VMA performance becomes one of the most viewed stages

VMAs 2023 delivered a number of memorable performances, including Shakira’s iconic medley stage and K-pop star TXT’s collaboration stage with Anitta. Among the iconic shows, Olivia’s Vampire performance became the second-most viewed of the night, garnering over 759,045 YouTube views within hours.

The Guts crooner stunned fans as one gushed on X (formerly Twitter): “Olivia Rodrigo’s performance was outstanding.”
