Meet Jace Chan, the Cantopop star making a comeback with her Hatching EP: she worked with Mirrors

October 2024 · 3 minute read

If you’ve missed seeing Hong Kong actor and singer Jace Chan in action, you won’t have to wait long for fresh appearances from her.

The 29-year-old went on hiatus for a year following a dispute with her former record label, Universal Music Hong Kong, ultimately leading them to part ways. Now, Chan has returned to the entertainment scene, setting up her own company titled Jace World and putting out a five-track, 17-minute EP titled Hatching in October.

The singer studied public relations and advertising at Baptist University, and when she graduated, she worked as a show host for Universal Music Hong Kong’s online entertainment outlet – which gave her a glimpse into the industry.

She eventually scored a big break in acting with a supporting role in ViuTV’s drama Margaret & David – Ex in 2017. She also joined the local band Dusty Bottle as a guest vocalist, and gained traction with the covers she uploaded onto her YouTube channel.

Universal took notice of her talent and signed her to the label in 2019. Two years later, Chan released her first studio album Processing, featuring collaborations with Terence Lam and Error’s FatBoy.

The singer was widely considered a rising star in the industry at the time, releasing her first single in 2019 and taking home the New Artist Award at the Metro Radio Hit Awards that same year.

When it comes to fashion, the former stylist is often seen sporting baggy pants and midriff-baring tops, and she appears to love building her outfits around these basics. Her looks range from feminine to playful, from a sparkling Chanel dress paired with chains and chunky bracelets to figure-hugging cropped tops and oversized bottoms.

Her new record features credits by local musicians including Kiri T and Hirsk, and comes after her forced hiatus when the artist had to wait for the contract with her former label to expire before releasing new works.

In an interview with Hypebeast, Chan revealed that she released the EP after taking time to rest and travel. While creating the record, she said, she would jot down all the small moments in life or thoughts that come to her.

Chan travelled to different cities including New York City, Cancún, Tulum, Mexico City, Taiwan and, most notably, Los Angeles, where she trained with dancers in the city.

“I’ve always pursued the same thing. From before I was signed to a record label to this present moment in time, what I wanted was to have a stage to sing, dance and see the audience,” she said in an interview with Morf Today.
